9 Arber, Edward: The English Garner. Ingatherings from our History and Literature. 8 vols, Constable 1898. Each vol approx 500p 20cm original cloth, spines professionally repaired, nice uniform set. Arber's massive reprint enterprise created a new basis for the study of English Renaissance: by reprinting rare and unknown texts, weaving literary texts and those of a more cultural, scientific or historical interest into one corpus, and by creating new markets for old texts through his own publishing enterprise (Arber's Reprints are scholarly chapbooks). His philological care, and his religious respect for anything printed (Cf Preface, Records of the Stationers' Co) still set standards. A great source, including many very rare texts. Arber was killed by taxi on Kensington High Street in 1912 £ 260.-
